<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So, if you are going to take anything away from this article it should be this. If you’re trying to find extra time in your day to fit in more training, sleep is definitely not something to be sacrificed.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In you should be doing the exact opposite, heading to bed earlier and staying tucked in longer. Speak to any top athlete and they will tell you that when they’re deep in a serious training program they will be increasing the amount of sleep proportionally. This will often mean augmenting the doctor-recommended eight hours a night and adding on top of that some well-timed post workout naps. All power to the power nap! </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Snacks have been a part of our lives since we were very young. Most kids growing up live on snack food between meals due to the fact that are growing so fast. Most people carry this habit over into adulthood and often question whether this is okay to continue. Are these okay for me to be eating? Are they </span><strong><a href="https://www.livin3.com/am-i-overweight-or-just-right">making me overweight</a></strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It turns out that, yes, some of these snacks can be making you gain weight. Many snacks are very high in empty calories as well as sugars and carbohydrates that are not necessary in excess. Empty calories do absolutely nothing for the body and contain no nutrients, hence the name (empty calories). We also tend to over eat snacks as they usually are consumed out of boredom, habit, stress, or need to stay awake at work. According to experts, adults can consume as many as 600 calories more than needed per day. Considering that a pound of fat is equivalent to about 3,500 calories, you could be adding almost 0.25 of a pound a day (depending on exactly how many calories over you are) (Bad Effects of Snacking). Depending on how much you snack, that is more than 1 pound a week!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, snacking is not entirely bad for your health and can actually </span><strong><a href="http://www.ontheroadtofit.com/how-to-lose-weight-without-exercise/">help you lose weight even without exercise</a></strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">. There are many healthy ways to snack. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, there are ways to avoid the empty calorie snacks. They have a few rules to follow. </span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Eat only when hungry. When we eat out of boredom, stress, anger, etc. we tend to overeat, even healthy foods. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Have snacks planned and ready for when you are hungry. It is kind of like meal planning but just with snacks. For example, if you eat veggies or fruits have them cut and in separate bags or containers. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Eat a variety of snacks. Have snacks that contain whole grain, protein, and healthy fats. This could include low-fat dairy products like yogurt or cheese, whole grain crackers, fruits, vegetables, etc. (Smart Snacking for Adults and Teens). </span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the long run, gaining weight can make you age faster. Your body is only made to handle so much weight and fat. If too many calories are consumed, fat can start to build up- and fast! This can definitely expedite the aging process. When we gain weight, we tend to not get up and exercise as much as we need to be. We are okay with sitting more than being active which can then lead to more snacking, which can lead to more weight gain, which continues the vicious cycle. However, eating healthy snacks, getting exercise, and getting sleep can all keep your weight under control. Just remember to snack wisely and be mindful of what is being put into your body; you only get one. </span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">As the writer here at BFT, I&#8217;ve delved into many different health topics this past year.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Out of all of my readings and research, there are a few things that have stuck with me. These are by no means a comprehensive list of important health to-do’s for this year, but these are beneficial health concepts that we could all stand to focus more on in 2018.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Read on below.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">1. Eat Real Food</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">All of the best diets in the world can be boiled down to one concept: eat real food. It’s a simple idea, but in a world were pre-packaged and processed foods are readily available, it’s difficult to eat healthy.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">A simple way around this is to do “meal prep”, that is, prepare multiple meals in one cooking session. Doing this has saved me time, money, and has contributed to my health by allowing me to have balanced meals during my busy days.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">If you’re interested in starting meal prep (whether for lunches or dinners), check out this helpful blog.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">2. Make Exercise Enjoyable</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Often times exercise can seem as if it is divorced from the rest of your life. You HAVE to do it. Get in that jog. Do some crunches, etc….</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Rather than developing your fitness in isolation, integrate it into your life! </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Get outdoors, take a bike ride, go paddle boarding with your spouse. Exercise doesn’t have to be isolating if you don’t let it. Get outdoors and do it with other people!</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">3. Sleep Is Vital</span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">We all tend to underestimate the benefits of sleep. We all have hectic schedules, and sleep is usually the last thing to get prioritized. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">But skimping on sleep is a mistake.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">After researching the benefits of REM sleep (and non-REM as well), I realized that sleep is crucial for the success of my day. If I can help it, I try and get a minimum of 7 hours in per night. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Whether it’s going to bed a little earlier, or <a href="https://www.utzy.com/blogs/sleep/benefits-of-napping"><span class="s2">sneaking a nap in during the afternoon</span></a>, getting 7+ hours of sleep per day will increase your productivity. This boost more than makes up for the time you lose while asleep.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">4. Gratitude Is Important </span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">We could all stand to say the words “thank you” more. Gratitude is important. In fact, a study done in 2012 noted that people that people that are more grateful have healthier, happier lives (<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/amymorin/2014/11/23/7-scientifically-proven-benefits-of-gratitude-that-will-motivate-you-to-give-thanks-year-round/#2e112bfd183c"><span class="s2">source</span></a>). </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">A good way to be more grateful is to keep a gratitude journal. You don’t need anything fancy, simply grab a paper and pen and write down 3-5 things every day that you are thankful for.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">You can do this in the morning or at night, whatever works best for your schedule. I like to do it at night, it helps me to unwind and reflect on my day.</span></p>
<h2 class="p1"><span class="s1">5. Live In Community </span></h2>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Whether you are introverted or extroverted, being with other people is important. Seeing how other people process things and how they live life is life-giving.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Strive to not only live in community, but to also serve others. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Through giving we get.</span></p>
